June has been Hot and Busy

View from my rear view mirror
So far June has been a very busy month. Since the splash park opened, we've been there near daily. The kids have been enjoying the sunshine, but staying up way too late and getting up too early. I had my first 5:00am wake up call this year and it was unpleasant for all of us.

Devin's appointments have been going well. We moved down to only twice a month - which is GREAT. Now I experience the traffic that you see to the right much less frequently. These were taken only about a mile off of base, so it was a bit of a frustrating ride to have it start that soon and still have a good 45 minutes + of driving ahead. I have a strategy of avoidance for D.C. traffic. The more I avoid, the more I love where we live.

On June 2nd I received my first ever fillings and it was something else. I had all four of my wisdom teeth filled as a precaution since the grooves were so deep. The rest of the day I felt like I was chewing my gums and would occasionally spit out my food to check for blood...
Traffic on the way to Devin's appointment!

The next weekend we had Justin's CrossFit for Hope Event in downtown D.C. I think this event has really gotten me pumped for opening the gym and doing CrossFit. It's a little hard to get excited about something you are doing by yourself in the garage whilst children are fighting. But, seeing all the CrossFit "celebrities," watching Justin do such a great job raising money for a good cause, and being with hundreds of other people living the same lifestyle was really cool. Actually what really got me excited about CrossFit was the meat van parked outside the event serving paleo lunch ;) .

Speaking of CrossFit and Paleo, I do have to say a huge thank you to them for Justin's hawtness. He walks around without a shirt on often and it's really distracting. Really. Here's a comparison pic from this summer and then our family photo from 2008.

Ultimate hippification.. homemade sunscreen.
In other news, I made some homemade sunscreen. Which was fairly expensive.. but definitely not as expensive as buying the pre-made all-natural stuff in the store. They smell like chocolate bars and I think they do a decent job of sun protection, but not better than store-bought stuff. Most of us don't burn easily here though, so it's no big deal to use less strong stuff.

I've been going to the farmer's market at Dupont Circle nearly every weekend and have picked up purple cauliflower twice now. I was very intrigued to see this strange looking vegetable and had to try it. After cooking it a couple of times, I think it's definitely better in its raw form as part of a salad or something. It doesn't taste like the regular white stuff.

Justin had his first drill at the Air Force Memorial on Friday the 15th and did a great job. I was nervous for him and hoping that there wouldn't be any drops. He has so far only narrated and from what I understand, if you drop during a performance, it makes it hard for you to get back on the list next time. I didn't want him stuck narrating the whole time he's on drill team. Luckily, no drops. Sadly, this means he will probably be gone more often.. It makes me a little sad when he has to leave for trips or is gone weeknights and he's got the added job at the gym that he's picked up more hours for, so the past month or so has been a little tough. Lukas asks me why dad is at work all the time and I just answer that that's what he has to do so we can keep buying things that we need and that when we open the gym he can go to work with dad whenever he wants to.

The rest of my time has been filled up with writing our business plan. Doing research for this and carefully considering proper wording has been time consuming. As I do more and more of it though, I am coming to love it. This is the first project Justin and I have ever collaborated on and I think we compliment each other well. Justin really has a passion for this and it's the first time I've seen him working towards a goal.

I've been giving much thought lately to pursuing my degree in nutrition or dietetics and also have planned to get several certifications. The past few years since graduating I have kind of been floating around not really focused on figuring out what I want to do or doing much more than cleaning house/raising kids. So I'm excited. This entire next year and probably the year after it promise to fly by.
Purple cauliflower! NEAT!!
